Aages Bådebyggeri; cover, cost and conditions

Aages Bådebyggeri, also spelled Åges Bådeværft, was the boatyard of Hans Aage Larsen in Maribo on the Danish island of Lolland. In Denmark the name goes hand in hand with the L boats drawn by Lars Olsen. Olsen sketched the L 23 in 1974, and at Easter 1976 the first hull, sail number D1, was launched at Maribo. The larger L 29 followed at the end of the seventies. Maribo built it too, though other yards turned out hulls as well and some boats left as kits for owners to finish themselves. Both designs are easy to spot: a fibreglass hull, a short fin keel, a free standing spade rudder and a fractional rig with the lines led aft, so a family can handle the boat with a small crew. In 1983 the L 23 moulds moved to Peter Bjørn Olsen in Stubbekøbing.

Our model records hold two designs from the yard, both keelboats under nine metres. The L 23 appears as a sailing boat of 7.18 metres, listed with build years from 1972 to 1983. The L 29 is filed as a sailing yacht of 8.86 metres, recorded from 1975 to 2002. It is a small programme with a clear logic: one compact boat for club racing and day sailing, and one with more room below for longer passages in the Baltic and the Danish belts. No new L 23 hulls can appear, because the moulds were destroyed in 1995. The boat still races as a national keelboat class under Dansk Sejlunion, backed by an active owners' association.

Anyone looking at a used L 23 or L 29 is looking at a boat with decades behind it. The keel attachment deserves the first glance, since a short fin carries a large share of the weight in lead, and the keel bolts and the surrounding laminate should be checked on the hard. The spade rudder bearings, the chainplates and the deck fittings come next, as on any fibreglass boat of the period. On the L 29 it helps to ask which yard moulded the hull, or whether it was a kit finished by a private owner, because the quality of the interior work varies accordingly. For an L 23 that will race, a valid class measurement matters more than a fresh coat of varnish.

What this means for the cover

For the L 29 by Aages Bådebyggeri series the market value and the replacement cost often differ

widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the L 23 by Aages Bådebyggeri series there is no list price left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the L 29 by Aages Bådebyggeri series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.

For the L 23 by Aages Bådebyggeri series:

On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.

A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
