Worth knowing

AB Scandi Yachts Oy; cover, cost and conditions

AB Scandi Yachts Oy has been building sailing yachts in Finland since 1979. Its founder came from Nautor and was one of the five boatbuilders who left that yard to set up Baltic Yachts. That background shows in the way Scandi works: light hulls, vacuum-laminated with a foam-cored sandwich, as the trade press describes the more recent Scandi 42. That deck saloon yacht of about 12.8 metres was drawn by Ulf Rogerberg and is meant to be sailed in every season. Building light and stiff was the very aim of the group that once left Nautor to found Baltic. In our model records the yard appears mainly with yachts from the eighties and nineties that now change hands on the second-hand market.

Our model records list four designs, all of them sailing yachts and all longer than twelve metres. The oldest is the Scandi 40 at 12.1 metres, recorded from 1985 to 1992. A gap follows until the Scandi 52 at 15.9 metres arrives in 1997. In 1998 the Scandi 57 at 17.65 metres and the Scandi 65 at 19.9 metres join the range, the latter being the largest yacht from the yard in our data. All three big lines end in 2005, and none reaches the most recent build years. The figure in each name roughly matches the length in feet. The newer Scandi 42 is not yet part of our records.

A Scandi from the late nineties is now more than twenty years old, and at 16 to 20 metres its systems resemble those of a small ship. A survey by someone familiar with yachts of this size is worth every hour: standing rigging, chainplates and the keel attachment come first, followed by moisture readings in the sandwich laminate, particularly around deck fittings and through-hulls, where water can creep into a foam core. Engine hours, the generator and the state of the sails tell a lot about how the boat has been used. Yachts of this length need a berth, a crane and a yard that can handle them, which is worth planning before the purchase.
