Worth knowing
Anderson Rigden & Perkins Ltd; cover, cost and conditions
Anderson, Rigden & Perkins was a boatyard in Whitstable on the north Kent coast. It built motor boats and craft for the Admiralty, and during the Second World War it took on a great deal of repair work. Later the yard did well with the Anderson 22, a glassfibre lifting keel boat that worked both as a cruiser and as a racer. Part of the company's records was lost in a fire at the yard, and other material was destroyed when no library could take it in. Boatbuilder Alan Staley tells the yard's story in Last One Down The Slip, published by the Friends of Whitstable Museum and Gallery, and Simon Papendick keeps a register of the surviving boats.
Our model records hold two designs. The Anderson 22 is listed as a sailing boat of 6.7 metres with build years 1973 to 1982. The Anderson 26 is entered as a sailing yacht of 7.92 metres, built from 1979 to 1986. Between 1979 and 1982 both were built side by side. Neither line reaches the recent build years, so the youngest boats are now almost forty years old. Anyone looking for one today will find it second hand.
A lifting keel is the heart of an Anderson 22, and it needs attention. Check the lifting mechanism, the wire or tackle and the keel box for wear and weeping, and ask when the keel was last dropped and inspected. On any glassfibre boat of this age, look at the deck to hull joint, the chainplates and the rudder fittings. The shallow draft with the keel raised lets the boat dry out in a creek or come home on a trailer.
