Bass Cat comes from Mountain Home, Arkansas, close to Lake Norfork. Ron Pierce and his wife Jan started the company in their two-car garage in 1971. Ron had worked as a plastics engineer in research and development and brought that background to boatbuilding: recessed pedals for the trolling motor, raised electronics and boats built as one unit rather than screwed together. In 2015 Correct Craft took over the company. A bass boat is a low, fast fishing boat for lakes and rivers, with raised casting decks at bow and stern and a strong outboard. Nearly every Bass Cat is named after a wild cat.
Our model records list 19 designs, all classed as motorboats, with build years from 2007. Ten of them reach the most recent build years: the Jaguar, Eyra, Lynx, Caracal, Margay, Pantera Classic and Pantera II, plus the FTD versions of the Cougar, Puma and Sabre. Nine designs end in 2017 or 2019, among them the Bay Cat, at 6.59 metres the longest boat, the Pantera IV, the Cougar Advantage and the two Skiff Cat 16 and 18. The Skiff Cat 16 is the smallest design at 4.61 metres. Apart from it, only the Phelix and the Skiff Cat 18 stay below 5.3 metres; the other 16 designs measure between 5.4 and 6.6 metres.
A bass boat works hard: high speeds on open water, launching and hauling out several times a week and a deck full of electronics. On a used Bass Cat look at the transom and the engine bracket for stress cracks, at the hull bottom for scrapes from ramps and stumps, and at the livewell pumps and wiring under the decks. The trolling motor mount takes a beating and should sit firm. Batteries and chargers age quickly, so ask how old they are. Because these boats spend most of their life on the trailer, its bearings, lights and bunks matter as much as the boat.
