What matters for this class of boat
List the outboard in the policy with power and serial number, or hull cover pays for the hull alone after a theft.
Check whether theft of parts, including the outboard, is covered and whether the policy requires an immobiliser or a lock.
Report repowering: a boat rated for 60 hp and driven with 115 hp is a different risk.
Check whether the trailer is part of the liability cover, and whether that still applies uncoupled and while manoeuvring.

Value: the engine sets the figure
On a sportsboat the outboard often carries a larger share of the value than the hull, and it is the part that changes hands most often. When you set the sum insured, add hull, engine, trailer and fitted electronics as separate lines and keep the invoices. A policy that names the engine by make, power and serial number leaves no room for argument after a theft, and it lets you claim the engine on its own when the hull is still there.
Use: fast boats, short seasons
Sportsboats are driven hard for a few weeks a year and stand still for the rest. Ask how the policy treats the boat while it is laid up, whether inland and coastal waters are priced the same, and whether towing water-skiers, wakeboarders or an inflatable is covered. A seasonal policy only makes sense if you know when the cover stops and starts: outside the season there is no cover at all, not even for the boat in winter storage.
Transport and storage
Most boats in this class live on a trailer. That means the boat is exposed on the road, in a car park and in a garage, not only at the berth. Check whether the hull cover applies during transport and in winter storage, whether the trailer itself is a separate item or part of the outfit, and whether a boat stolen together with its trailer counts as one claim or two.
Typical claims
Grounding on a sandbank, a stolen outboard, a propeller strike and a burst fuel line are the claims that come up again and again. Read the wording for engine damage: many policies pay for damage caused by an accident but not for a mechanical failure inside the engine. Knowing where that line runs saves a dispute later.
