Beavertail Skiffs; cover, cost and conditions
Beavertail Skiffs builds technical poling skiffs, the shallow draft boats used to stalk fish across the flats. The brand was founded in 2008 and started life in Minnesota, but since nearly all of its boats were heading to Florida anyway, production moved to the state's west coast around Bradenton and Palmetto. Will and Elizabeth Leslie run it through their company Aeon Marine LLC. They began by servicing and restoring boats, were first hired to do tooling and design work for Beavertail and later took over the brand. Hulls are all composite, laid up with vinyl ester resin by vacuum infusion. Look for the flared Carolina style bow, meant to keep the ride dry, and the poling platform over the stern.

The 20 Lightning tops the list at 6.09 metres. The whole programme spans little more than a metre from end to end.
Skiffs like these live on trailers and go in and out of the water constantly, so wheel bearings, rollers and the winch strap deserve regular attention. Running in a few inches of water means the bottom and the skeg take the odd knock from sand, shell and oyster bars; on a used boat, look there first, and around the transom where outboard and jack plate are bolted on. Vinyl ester composite does not rust, but stainless hardware stains and seizes if it is never rinsed after salt water. Check the poling platform mounts and the live well plumbing too, since both work hard on a flats boat.
