Beck & Söhne; cover, cost and conditions
Beck & Söhne is a yacht and boat yard on the island of Reichenau in the western part of Lake Constance. Isidor Beck founded it in 1896, and it is still working today. Among sailors the name is tied above all to skerry cruisers. The yard built the 30 square metre skerry cruiser to a design by Knud H. Reimers; one example from 1994 is a glassfibre boat 12.40 metres long and only 2.18 metres wide. Those figures explain how to spot the type: a very long, slim hull with long overhangs at bow and stern, topped by a tall, narrow rig. The class takes its name from its sail area in square metres, which is where the 22, 30 and 40 in the model names come from.
Our model records hold twelve designs: ten sailing yachts, one motorboat and one motor yacht, built between 1970 and 2013. Seven entries are skerry cruisers. The 22 appears twice, as Schärenkreuzer 22 qm and Schärenkreuzer S 22, both at 11.4 metres. The 30 has four entries between 12.4 and 12.42 metres, and the 40 measures 13 metres. Alongside them sit the Parant at 7.6 metres from 1971 to 1982, the Beck 990 at 9.9 metres from 1995 to 2005 and the Jubilee S 40, at 14.4 metres the longest boat on the list. Two entries stand apart: the Arbeitsboot Rundspant workboat at 10.1 metres and the Fischergondel Typ IV at 5.75 metres, built from 2007 to 2013. The oldest entry is a 30 from 1970, and no line runs into recent build years.
A skerry cruiser puts unusual loads on a slender hull. The tall rig pulls hard on chainplates, mast step and keel bolts, so these are the first things to inspect on a used boat, together with the rigging wire and the condition of the spars. Long overhangs make the boat fast once heeled but also mean the ends should be checked for soft spots or old repairs. Many of these boats spend their lives on lakes and are raced at club level, so look at the sails and ask how the boat was stored over winter. Older wooden or early glassfibre examples reward owners who keep a careful log of work done.

For the Fischergondel Typ IV, Beck 990,
Schärenkreuzer 30 qm by Beck & Söhne and 3 more series the market value and the replacement cost
often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the Schärenkreuzer 30 qm, Jubilee S 40,
Arbeitsboot Rundspant by Beck & Söhne and 1 more series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Fischergondel Typ IV by Beck & Söhne series:
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part.
Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
For the Beck 990, Schärenkreuzer 30 qm, Schärenkreuzer 40 qm by Beck & Söhne and further series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Arbeitsboot Rundspant by Beck & Söhne series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
