Worth knowing
Bell Woodworking Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions
Bell Woodworking is a British name from the world of plywood dinghies. It is remembered above all for the Miracle, a dinghy drawn by Jack Holt and one of his last designs. The first Miracles were launched in 1975. Holt worked with Barry Read on a slot and glue method in which the plywood parts lock together and are bonded, so that even inexperienced amateurs could build a boat from a kit. Bell Woodworking was the only source of those kits and also built finished boats, and the quality of the yard built craft is reported to have been good. The Bell name also appears on the Hydra 16, a beach catamaran designed by Mike West and built in Britain by Allan Bell.
Our model records list three designs: two sailing dinghies and one sailing catamaran. The Miracle Dinghy measures 3.89 metres and the Flyer 4.27 metres, both listed for the years 1987 to 1993. The Hydra catamaran is older, 5.03 metres long and entered from 1975 to 1982. The range in our records therefore runs from just under four to just over five metres, and none of the lines reaches into recent build years. The Miracle itself was later also built with glassfibre hulls, but the Bell boats in our records date from before that change.
A plywood dinghy built from a kit needs a careful look before purchase. The glued joints along the slots, the transom and the centreboard case are where water tends to get in, and soft spots in the bottom panels show up when the boat is turned over. Varnish and paint are the first line of defence and should be renewed before they wear through. On the Hydra the hulls, beams and trampoline fittings deserve the same attention, together with the rudder stocks. Both types are usually trailed to the water and sailed in club fleets, and the active Miracle class in Britain is a good place to find advice and spare parts.
