Bernico Racing International; cover, cost and conditions
Bernico is a Belgian builder of fast powerboats, founded in 1991 by Nico Bertels. Its roots are in racing: the yard builds boats for water ski racing and the smaller offshore classes and has won Belgian and international titles in Formula 1, Formula 2 and Formula 3. Much of the work is built to order in composites and carbon fibre. The model names give it away. The Xtreme boats carry their racing class, F1, F2 or F3, and on the Rx RIBs the number is the length in metres, so the Rx9 is 9 metres and the Rx 10 exactly 10.
Our model records list 15 Bernico designs: eight motorboats, six RIBs and one motor yacht. The earliest is the plain Bernico line from 1998 to 2005, and 13 lines are recorded up to the latest model years. Six models form the Xtreme family, four are the R7, Rx9, Rx 10 and Rxp 11 RIBs, and the 42 and 45 Leverage, the CCX and the Vc 35 complete the list. Lengths run from the 6.07 metre F3 Xtreme to the 13.72 metre 45 Leverage, with all three F1 versions at 7.14 metres.
A Bernico is built for speed, and that shapes how it is kept. The small Xtreme boats and RIBs up to 7.5 metres usually live on a trailer and travel to race venues, while the Leverage boats stay in a berth. High output engines need strict service intervals, and carbon and composite hulls are worth checking for stress marks after a hard season.
