Blackfin Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Blackfin was founded in 1973 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, a place where offshore fishing is part of everyday life. The yard built offshore fishing boats with deep V hulls and heavy construction, made for rough water rather than long comfortable passages. From the late nineties the brand changed hands several times, and production carried on only on a small scale. Later the name was relaunched with centre console boats for outboard power, their hulls reinforced with carbon fibre. The model codes tell you the layout: CC stands for centre console, a central helm with room to walk all the way round, DC for dual console, with two consoles and a walkthrough in the windscreen.
Our model records hold ten designs: nine Blackfin motorboats and one rigid inflatable, the Blackfin Elegance 9 at 8.84 metres, built from 2014 to 2020. Six models carry the CC code, from the Blackfin 212CC at 6.55 metres to the Blackfin 332CC at 10.11 metres, and three the DC code: the 242DC, 252 DC and 272DC. In our records the centre consoles start in 2016. Six designs reach into the most recent build years: the 222 CC, 252 CC, 252 DC, 272CC, 272DC and 332CC. The 212CC, 242CC and 242DC are recorded until 2021. Eight of the ten designs fall between seven and nine metres.
Centre consoles live in the sun and the spray, and a used Blackfin shows its history on deck. Check the transom and the outboard mounting area for stress cracks, and ask for the hours and service records of each outboard. Look at fish boxes, livewells and their pumps, which are often worked hard. Electronics age quickly, so make sure screens, transducers and the wiring behind the console are dry and tidy. Hatches and their gutters should drain freely. A deep V hull runs smoothly through a chop, but repeated hard landings can leave traces inside the hull, so a look into the bilge is worthwhile.

On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part.
Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
For the Blackfin Elegance 9 by Blackfin Boats series: On an inflatable the cause decides,
not the damage: a tear from impact is covered, porous fabric after years in the sun is not.
The outboard belongs in the policy with its serial number.
