Worth knowing

Bloemsma; cover, cost and conditions

Bloemsma Aluminiumbouw works from Makkum, a harbour town in Friesland on the shore of the IJsselmeer. The yard specialises in aluminium hulls built to the rules of classification societies such as Lloyd's Register and ABS, and it also produces superstructures for large yachts. That makes Bloemsma the hand behind the hull in many projects, while fit-out and sales may carry a different name. Yachts from Makkum that come up on the market range from just over 23 to 27 metres. The common thread is the welded aluminium hull, a material that is light and can be shaped freely to a designer's lines.

Our model records hold one design under Bloemsma: the RSC 1900, a sailing yacht of 18.65 metres with build years from 2016 to 2021. The design comes from RSC Yachts, which offers aluminium sailing yachts from 19 metres upwards, built one at a time for long voyages. RSC Yachts placed hull construction and final assembly of the RSC 1900 with Bloemsma in Makkum, and the first boat was shown to the public at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2019. No line in our records reaches into the most recent build years. Anyone looking at an RSC 1900 today is looking at a young yacht whose equipment can differ a great deal from one owner to the next.

Aluminium asks for its own kind of care. Where stainless steel, bronze or copper meet the hull, galvanic corrosion can start, so fittings must be properly isolated and the anodes checked and replaced on time. A galvanic isolator on the shore power line and a careful look at stray currents in the marina are worth the trouble. The paint system protects the metal, and any blister or chip below the waterline deserves attention before it spreads. When buying a used aluminium yacht, ask for ultrasonic thickness readings of the plating and have the welds and the areas around through-hulls inspected. A boat built for ocean passages should also come with a clear record of how its rig and systems were serviced.

Series by Bloemsma, build years and cover

RSC 1900

RSC 1900 is a sailing yacht from Bloemsma, built from 2016 to 2021.

What this means for the cover

For the RSC 1900 by Bloemsma series the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the RSC 1900 by Bloemsma series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
