Worth knowing

Blondecell Marine Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions

Blondecell built sailing yachts at Lymington on the south coast of England, and the name is closely tied to heavy cruising boats. It made its mark with the Tradewind 35, drawn by the British designer John Rock in the mid seventies. The boat developed the smaller Tradewind 33 into a heavy displacement cutter for long passages, laid up in solid glassfibre and given a longer keel. The Tradewind 35 was later also built by Tradewind Yachts in the Netherlands. Blondecell also built the Cromarty 36, designed by Wyatt & Freeman, a long-keeled ketch whose lines follow traditional Scottish fishing boats.

Our model records list three designs, all entered as sailing yachts. The Tradewind 35 measures 10.66 metres and has the longest run, from 1975 to 2006. The smaller Tradewind 25 comes to 7.62 metres and is listed from 1985 to 2000. At 11 metres the Cromarty 36 is the largest design, entered for 1991 to 1998. None of the three lines reaches into the most recent build years. Together the entries span just over three decades and run from under eight to eleven metres, with weight and directional stability rather than speed at the heart of every design.

These are boats for long passages, and many of them have already made some. When looking at a used Tradewind or Cromarty it pays to check the keel to hull joint area, the rudder fittings on the long keel and the chainplates, which carry the loads of a cutter or ketch rig. Solid laminate is forgiving, yet older decks with balsa or plywood cores can hold water around fittings. Standing rigging of unknown age should be renewed before an ocean crossing. Many owners have added wind vane steering, solar panels and extra tankage over the years, and the quality of that work tells a lot about how the boat has been looked after.

What this means for the cover

For the Tradewind 35 by Blondecell Marine Ltd.

series the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Tradewind 25 and Cromarty 36 by Blondecell Marine Ltd.

series there is no list price left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the Tradewind 35, Tradewind 25, Cromarty 36 by Blondecell Marine Ltd.

series: On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
