Bluewater Cruising Yachts is an Australian yard, its factory not far from Lake Macquarie in New South Wales. The designs come from the naval architect Joe Adams. Every yacht is built to order and fitted out for its owner, and the yard gives a lifetime structural warranty. The name says what the boats are for: long passages and living aboard. They are easy to tell apart by their deckhouses. The raised saloon versions lift the saloon above the deck, while the pilot house version combines a proper wheelhouse with a built-in dodger and sun roof over the cockpit. On the 520 the yard offered an optional hydraulic lifting keel with a bulb, so that shallow anchorages stay within reach.

On a used Bluewater, ask for records of the standing rigging, the engine hours and the age of the sails, and look at the watermaker, batteries and electronics that long-distance owners tend to add. A raised saloon or pilot house means large windows, so check their seals and frames for leaks. On a 520 with the lifting keel, the hydraulic system and the keel box deserve a careful survey, ideally with the boat out of the water. Many of these yachts have crossed oceans, and a full survey that includes keel bolts and rudder bearings is worth the time.
