Bluewater Sportfishing Boats, Inc.,; cover, cost and conditions
Bluewater Sportfishing Boats is based in Fort Pierce on Florida's Atlantic coast and builds centre console boats for offshore fishing. Paul Skilowitz is owner and president. The hulls are deep vees with 24 degrees of deadrise and wide chines, which the angling press credits with a dry, smooth ride in rough water. Every boat is built entirely of glassfibre with no wood anywhere; topsides and transom are foam cored, and a stringer grid called Multi-Plex gives the hull its stiffness. Alongside the offshore boats the yard also builds an inshore line. A single level deck from bow to stern is typical, and on the 23T a livewell sits in the leaning post at the helm.
Our model records list eleven designs, all entered as motorboats. The numbered series 2150, 2350, 2550 and 2850 starts in 2004, as does the Bluewater 23 t, and spans 7.3 to 9.4 metres. Smaller are the 160 Fly Caster and 160 Pro at 4.9 metres and the 180 and 180 Pro at 5.5 metres, all listed from 2011, plus the 210 Pro at 6.4 metres from 2013. The largest boat is the Bluewater 355e at 10.4 metres, listed from 2007. Every one of the eleven designs reaches into the most recent build years. Four stay under six metres and three measure more than eight.
A centre console that spends its days offshore lives a hard life. Salt works its way into hinges, hatches and the wiring at the console, so a freshwater rinse after every trip pays off. On a used boat, look at the transom around the engine brackets, at the stringer grid where it meets the hull and at the hatches over the fish boxes and livewells. Rod holders and the leaning post carry real loads when a big fish is on, so their fastenings deserve a close look as well. Many of these boats travel to the ramp on a trailer, which makes bearings, brakes and rollers part of any inspection. Engine hours and the service history of the outboards tell more than the build year alone.
