Worth knowing
Bossoms Boatyard Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions
Bossoms Boatyard sits on the bank of the Thames in Oxford, facing Port Meadow. The Bossom family ran it for several generations, from about 1830 until 1945, and boats are still built on the same site. The yard was among the first to mould hulls in glass fibre and exhibited at the very first London Boat Show. Today it concentrates on sailing craft and electric boats. The designs in our records have a classic look and friendly names rather than type codes: Nell, Patricia, Suzanna, Hornet and Mosquito.
Our model records list eight Bossoms designs: six motorboats, one motor yacht and one sailing boat. Hornet, Mosquito and Suzanna 12 are the oldest, built from 1989 to 1996. The Bosun sailing boat follows from 1993 to 1999. From 1997 the Oyster 14, Oyster 16, Nell 20 and Patricia 32 join; the two Oysters and the Patricia run to 2004, the Nell 20 to 2005. Lengths go from 3.15 metres (Mosquito) to 9.69 metres (Patricia 32), the only motor yacht. Six of the eight stay under 5 metres; only the 8.05 metre Nell 20 and the Patricia 32 are much bigger.
These are river and lake boats at heart, light enough for a trailer or a slipway and happy on a mooring by the bank. Locks and shallow banks call for good fenders and a gentle hand on the throttle. An older glass fibre hull from the 1990s is worth checking for osmosis and tired fittings, and winter storage ashore keeps the woodwork and electrics in good shape.
