Brettschneider; cover, cost and conditions
Brettschneider is the name under which two racing dinghies appear in our records, both drawn by the British designer Peter Milne. We have not found reliable information on the builder itself, its location or its history, so this page sticks to the boats. The Fireball is a two-person dinghy with trapeze and spinnaker, conceived by Milne as a one-design class and built since 1962. It was originally meant for amateur construction in wood, while most new hulls today are laid up in fibreglass. Its flat, hard-chined scow hull with a retractable centreboard makes it easy to recognise. Milne followed it in 1968 with the Javelin, another boat for a crew of two with a trapeze, raced in Britain, Germany and the Netherlands.
Our model records hold two sailing dinghies. The Fireball measures 4.93 metres and is listed from 1967 to 1991, while the Javelin is 5.38 metres long and appears from 1972 to 1991. Both lines therefore stop in the same year, and no current production under this name is on file. Every boat of the brand comes from a window of a little over two decades, and the youngest is now around 35 years old. Anyone looking for a Brettschneider will be shopping on the used market, usually for a boat with several previous owners and a long racing history behind it.
With dinghies of this age, condition matters far more than the year. On a wooden hull, look for soft spots around the centreboard case, the chine and the transom, and check that glue lines have not opened. On a fibreglass boat, press along the floor and the side decks for delamination and inspect the mast step and the shroud plates, which carry high loads when the crew is out on the trapeze. Sails, spars and rigging are often newer than the hull and show how actively the boat has been raced. Fireball and Javelin fleets sail mostly on inland lakes and sheltered coastal waters, and the class measurement certificate is a useful document to ask for when buying.
