The Leisure name goes back a long way in English small-boat sailing, and the Cory yard in Kent wrote its final chapter. The story began with Cobramold of Stansted in Essex, whose Leisure 17 was launched at the London Boat Show in 1967. When Cobramold went into liquidation in 1980, Brinecraft took over the moulds and kept building until a fire in 1990 stopped production. Cory Yachts then drew new Leisure designs, among them the Leisure 18 and the Leisure 24. Simon Cory designed the 18, and it was built at the Cory yard in Kent. The owners' association records that Cory Yachts later left the market, partly because of the cost of meeting the Recreational Craft Directive.

The owners' association gives 1996 as the year of the design, so our records start a little earlier. The hull is a one-piece GRP moulding with keels and skeg moulded in and foam stiffening throughout. Twin lead-ballasted bilge keels with an aerofoil section are standard, keeping the draught to about 0.68 metres. Power usually comes from an outboard in a well under a cockpit seat, with a small saildrive diesel as an option. Below, there are three berths with an enclosed heads or four without.
Twin keels make the Leisure 18 a natural for drying moorings and shallow creeks, and they also tell you where to look on a used boat. Check the keel stubs and the inside of the hull above them for cracks or weeping, and look at the keel bolts if they are accessible. Repeated groundings leave their marks on the skeg as well. The outboard well needs a sound seal and free drainage. Being trailerable is half the appeal, so inspect the trailer, its rollers and its lighting too. Foam-stiffened GRP hulls from the nineties are usually solid, but soft spots in the deck around fittings deserve a firm press of the thumb.
