Brooklands Aviation; cover, cost and conditions
Brooklands Aviation was based at Weybridge in Surrey, and as the name suggests it was a firm that also built aircraft. On the water it was known for the small Dolphin cruisers, aimed largely at the Norfolk Broads. The Broads boat register lists four designs: the Dolphin, the Dolphin 20, the Dolphin 23 Centre Cockpit and the Dolphin 24. Boats were built from the late fifties into the early seventies, the early ones entirely in marine plywood, later ones with a glassfibre hull under a wooden superstructure. They are not to be confused with the boats of Dolphin Boats of Catfield.
Our model records list one design from Brooklands Aviation: the Dolphin 20, a 6.1 metre motorboat with build years from 1968 to 1978. None of it reaches into recent production. With a beam of 6 feet 10 inches the Dolphin 20 is narrow enough for the English canals, and a 1965 example draws just 18 inches. Below there are three berths, a toilet and a galley. Engines vary a great deal: inboards with Z drives, Ford units on Enfield drives, OMC and Mercruiser, with later boats running up to about 120 horsepower.
With a Dolphin 20 the first question is what the hull is made of. Plywood boats need a careful look at the chines, the transom and anywhere fresh water can sit, while glassfibre hulls with timber tops tend to suffer where wood meets resin. The drive leg deserves as much attention as the engine: bellows, gaiters and corrosion on an old Z drive are costly to put right. Owners who keep these boats on the Broads or the canals spend a lot of time in locks and at moorings, so look at the rubbing strakes, the windows and the fendering too.
