BSC builds rigid inflatables in Italy. Roberto Colzani founded the works in 1990 at Mariano Comense not far from Lake Como and showed two further models at the Genoa show in the same year. His children run the house today. Building is in four lines: leisure boats, craft for excursions and diving, tenders and open models. You recognise the boats by the deep vee hull with its high bow, the substantial tube carried well aft and the neatly moulded console; the finish is drawn for durability rather than decoration.
Our model records list 43 BSC models, 36 of them rigid inflatables and seven soft inflatables. Build years start in 1993 and run into current production. Forty three series are recorded: the BSC 43, 46 and 46 Sport, 50, 53, 57, 62 and 65; the Tender models 44, 51, 66 and 71; the Open models 60, 70 and 75; and the Charter versions 65 and 70. Lengths run from 4.3 to 10.4 metres, half the models between 6.1 and 8.3 metres. The number gives the length in decimetres, so a BSC 65 measures around 6.5 metres.
On a rigid inflatable of this size three things matter and none appears in the model name: the engine, which on a six to eight metre boat carries a large share of the value; the state of the tube, which ages through sunlight and abrasion quite independently of the hull beneath it; and how the boat is actually used, since a diving or excursion boat leads a harder life than a private one.
