Butler Mouldings; cover, cost and conditions

Butler Mouldings was a British glassfibre boatbuilder founded by the designer Chris Butler. The company started out moulding products outside the marine world and moved into leisure boats in the sixties, working from Gowerton near Swansea in South Wales. Its name is tied to the Achilles range, small and sturdy cruising yachts meant for open water yet easy to handle. Oliver Lee and Chris Butler drew the Achilles 24 in 1968. Not every boat was finished at the yard: amateur builders could buy kits from Butler and complete the boat themselves. Production came to an end in the eighties.

Our model records list four designs, all carrying the Achilles name: three sailing yachts and one sailing boat. The Achilles 24, classed as a sailing boat, has the longest run, 7.24 metres long and recorded from 1967 to 1984. The Achilles 7m, exactly seven metres, appears from 1972 to 1978, and the Achilles 9, at 9.11 metres, from 1972 to 1984. Last to finish is the Achilles 840 at 8.4 metres, listed from 1975 to 1987. None of the lines reaches recent build years, so every boat is now close to forty years old or more. All four sit between seven and just over nine metres.

Buying an Achilles today means buying a boat of real age, and condition varies widely. Check the hull for osmosis and the deck for soft areas around fittings, chainplates and the mast step. Standing rigging that is more than ten years old should be replaced rather than trusted. Because some Achilles were completed from kits by amateur builders, ask who finished the boat and look closely at the joinery, the hull to deck joint and the keel attachment. Engines in boats of this era have often been swapped; find out what is fitted and how many hours it has run. A well kept Achilles still makes a capable small cruiser for coastal passages.

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.

A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
