Worth knowing
C.N.S.O.; cover, cost and conditions
C.N.S.O. (Aikido) is short for Constructions Nautiques du Sud-Ouest, a French yard set up by the Austrian Otto Tiefenbach. The company was registered in Agen and built its boats in the Laville industrial zone at Bon-Encontre in Lot-et-Garonne, a long way inland. Hulls were laid up in polyester, the Saké for example in solid single-skin laminate, and the yard promoted itself with the idea of making the sea accessible to everyone. Its yachts became known as sturdy cruising boats rather than racers. The model names give the brand away at once: Mikado, Shogun, Samurai, Kendo, Geisha and Saké are almost all borrowed from Japanese. The yard has since closed its doors.
Our model records hold 17 designs, eleven sailing yachts and six smaller sailing boats, built between 1962 and 2000. None of them reaches into recent build years. The Shellfish of 8.75 metres opens the list in 1962, and the sixties brought the Super Dorade, Lotus, Samurai, Karaté, Geisha and Aikido. The Geisha is the smallest at 5.75 metres, and eight designs stay below eight metres. At the top sit the Kendo at 12.9 metres, the Mikado at 14.9 metres and the Mikado 16 m, the only design recorded right up to 2000. In between come the Shogun at 10.8 metres, the Kyudo and the Super Daimio.
Every C.N.S.O. (Aikido) still sailing is a classic glassfibre boat, and a proper survey before purchase pays off. Solid laminate of that era is thick, yet osmosis, soft spots around deck fittings and tired chainplates are the usual points to check. Standing rigging of unknown age is better replaced than trusted. The Mikado was conceived for long passages as a ketch or schooner, so tanks, engine hours, sails and the condition of both masts deserve a careful look. The smaller Samurai, Saké and Daimio suit coastal cruising with a family crew, and on these boats the state of the rudder, the keel bolts and the cabin joinery tells a lot about past care.
