Worth knowing
Cabo Rico Custom Yachts USA INC.; cover, cost and conditions
Cabo Rico Yachts built semi-custom glassfibre sailing yachts in Costa Rica. Its roots go back to the 1960s, when John Schofield began building boats in a corner of a British Leyland assembly plant near San José. The yard made its name with the Cabo Rico 38, a W.I.B. Crealock design introduced in 1977. Later Chuck Paine drew further models, among them the Cabo Rico 40 and 42 and the 56-footer. A sales office opened in Fort Lauderdale in 1983, and in 1987 the Canadians Fraser and Edi Smith bought the factory. After the economic crash the business closed in September 2009 and went bankrupt in 2010. A Cabo Rico 38 served as the main character's home in the pilot episode of Miami Vice.
Our model records list 18 sailing yachts under three names: 13 designs carry the Cabo Rico name, four belong to the Cambria line, and the Northeast 400 completes the list. The Cabo Rico 38 goes back furthest, starting in 1981, with the Cabo Rico 42 following from 1996. The other entries start in 2002 or 2003 and mostly end in 2012, while the Northeast 400 is listed until 2015. No line reaches the most recent build years. Lengths start at 10.4 metres with the Cabo Rico 34 and end at 18.1 metres with the Cabo Rico 56. The 38, 42 and 45 come in PH versions, the 45 also as a CC. Eight designs measure 15 metres or more, and the Cambria line runs from the 40 to the 52 at 12.6 to 16 metres.
Semi-custom yachts differ from one hull to the next, so a buyer should not assume that two boats of the same type share the same layout, tankage or engine. Glassfibre yachts of this age need a careful moisture survey, especially the decks around fittings and any teak laid on deck. Through-hull fittings, rudder bearings and chainplates deserve close inspection, as do the fuel and water tanks. Where a boat has made long passages, the logbook, the age of the rig and the state of the sails say a good deal about what lies ahead. Since the yard no longer exists, original drawings and spare parts have to be found through owners and specialist yards, which is worth planning for before a purchase.
