Cal Boats; cover, cost and conditions

Cal began as the Jensen Marine Corporation, founded by Jack Jensen in Costa Mesa, California, in 1957. The yard built sailing boats in glassfibre and did so in series production at a time when timber was still the norm. Its defining designer was Bill Lapworth, whose drawings include the Cal 40. After a string of owners, among them Bangor Punta and Lear Siegler, production came to an end in 1989. A Cal is easy to place on a pontoon: low, clean coachroof, fin keel and separate rudder, a profile that looked unusually sporty for a cruising boat of its day.

Our model records hold a single design from the brand, the Cal 29 sailing yacht at 8.75 metres, listed with build years from 1971 to 1979. William Lapworth drew her as a masthead sloop with a fixed fin keel drawing about 1.37 metres and an internally hung spade rudder. Of roughly 3.6 tonnes displacement, around 1.5 tonnes is ballast. The factory engine was a petrol Universal Atomic 4. Besides the Californian boats, Calgan Marine in North Vancouver built the Cal 29 under licence, and a cruising variant was sold as the Cal 2-29. None of the brand's entries reaches the most recent build years.

Half a century on, the original petrol engine is worth a close look, and many boats will have had engine work at some point. When looking at one for sale, check the keel bolts and the area around the fin for signs of past groundings, and look at how the spade rudder sits on its stock. Chainplates and deck fittings on older glassfibre boats deserve a close look for leaks, as damp core can hide under the deck. The design suits coastal cruising and club racing, and her moderate size keeps handling simple for a small crew.

Series by Cal Boats, build years and cover

Cal 29

Cal 29 is a sailing yacht from Cal Boats, built from 1971 to 1979.

What this means for the cover

For the Cal 29 by Cal Boats series there is no list price left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the Cal 29 by Cal Boats series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
