Caliber Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Caliber Yachts comes from Clearwater on Florida's Gulf coast. Brothers George and Michael McCreary set the company up in 1979 together with Marshall Jones, starting as a backyard boatbuilding operation. Michael McCreary had studied naval architecture and worked at Gulfstar and Endeavour, and every Caliber is his design. The first boat, a 28-footer, was finished in 1981. The yard made its name with the LRC line, short for Long Range Cruiser: cruising yachts with large tanks for fuel and water, meant for long passages away from harbours. Building stopped in 2010, and George McCreary has since looked after used Calibers through a brokerage of his own.
Our model records list three designs, all sailing yachts from the LRC line. The Caliber 40LRC starts in 1993 and measures 12.47 metres. The Caliber 35LRC at 11.36 metres and the Caliber 47LRC at 16.03 metres, the largest of the three, followed in 2001. All three are kept open in our records into recent build years, while the yard's own history puts the end of new building at 2010. The range from just over eleven to 16 metres suits yachts for a couple as well as for a family heading offshore.
These boats were designed to carry a lot, and owners tend to use that. Before buying a used LRC it pays to look closely at the integral tanks, the chainplates and the stern area, where solar panels, davits and wind vanes are often added. Long-range cruisers usually come with a deep inventory of sails, electronics and spares, so the equipment list deserves as much attention as the hull. Many have crossed oceans, and a logbook with passage history and maintenance notes is worth asking for.
