Callegari; cover, cost and conditions

Callegari is an Italian maker of inflatable boats that built large numbers of them from the 1970s onwards and sold them in several markets abroad. The brand now belongs to Italy's Recchia group, which brings composite experience from its aerospace company Aviorec. New Callegari boats are to be built entirely in Italy, beginning with a 15 metre RIB. The boats in our records come from the earlier era. They are grouped into the Ocean, Ocean Yachting, Olimpus and Tempest lines, and the number in the name gives the length in centimetres, more or less: the Ocean 430 is 4.28 metres long and the Olimpus 750 just under 7.5.

Our model records list eleven Callegari designs, ten inflatables and one rigid inflatable, the 7.49 metre Olimpus 750. The Ocean line includes the 360, 430 and 460, and the Ocean Yachting 430 and 460 are versions of the same lengths. Olimpus brings five models, from the 5.1 metre 510 through the 550, 610 and 650 to the 750, and the Tempest 650 measures 6.55 metres. Lengths run from 3.6 to 7.49 metres. The Ocean 460 appears from 1995, every other line from 1996, and all end in 2005. Five models stay under 5 metres, six sit between 5.1 and 7.49.

Tubes are the part that ages first on any inflatable. Rinsing off salt, keeping the boat out of strong sun and checking seams and valves each spring add years to a Callegari from this period. The small Ocean models suit a yacht's davits or a light trailer, while the Olimpus boats are day runners for beaches and islands, launched from a slipway. Store them slightly deflated and dry over winter.
