Worth knowing

Camara; cover, cost and conditions

Camara Marine is a boatyard in Zwartsluis in the Netherlands, and its name is tied above all to the Bolero, a daysailer drawn by Dubois Naval Architects, the studio of the designer Ed Dubois. The shape of the boat traces back to a 33 metre superyacht built at Vitters, and Camara scaled that idea down to a yacht of just over eleven metres that one or two people can handle on their own. The hull is a GRP sandwich, with deck and superstructure also in GRP. The Bolero 35 Mark III carries a carbon mast and boom above a bulb keel. You can pick one out at a glance: a long, very slim hull, a short waterline and generous overhangs, in other words the profile of a big classic yacht shrunk to a size you can sail after work.

Our model records hold one line from Camara, the Bolero sailing yacht, listed from the 1995 build year through 2005 at a length of 11.2 metres. A broker listing for the Mark III gives a beam of 2.50 metres, a draught of 1.75 metres and a waterline of only 7.10 metres. Power comes from a small Yanmar 1GM10 diesel driving a saildrive with a folding propeller. There is no family of sizes in our records, so anyone talking about a Camara almost certainly means a Bolero, a pure sailing boat for day trips rather than a cruiser with berths for a crew.

Because the Bolero is light and slender, the details of its build matter when you look at a used one. Have the carbon spars checked for impact damage and for wear where fittings are bolted on, and inspect the bulb keel joint and the keel bolts. On a sandwich hull, a moisture reading around deck fittings and the keel area is worth the time. The small diesel and the saildrive need a clean service history, including the saildrive seal. These boats are mostly sailed on Dutch lakes and inland waters, on the IJsselmeer and in sheltered coastal bays, where a short afternoon sail is what they are made for. Owners who store them indoors over winter tend to have the better varnish and sails.

Series by Camara, build years and cover

Bolero

Bolero is a sailing yacht from Camara, built from 1995 to 2005.

What this means for the cover

For the Bolero by Camara series the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Bolero by Camara series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
