Cantiere del Pardo builds sailing yachts in Emilia-Romagna. The house goes back to 1973 in Bologna and sits today at Forlì. Its first boat was the Grand Soleil 34, drawn by the French Finot office and carried in our records with build years from 1972. That yacht became the range the yard stands for: fast cruisers that are also raced. Later the Pardo line of motor yachts was added. You recognise the sailing yachts by the flat wide stern with its bathing platform, the very straight sheer and the deep fin keel; the deckhouse is low and long rather than tall and short.
Our model records list 54 Cantiere del Pardo models: 42 sailing yachts, ten motor yachts and two motorboats. Build years start in 1972 and run into current production. Fifty four series are recorded: the Grand Soleil in sizes 34, 35, 37, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 52, 58, 65, 72 and 80, carried in the Performance line for the sporting version and Long Cruiser or LC for the cruising one, plus the motor yachts Pardo 38, 43 and 50. Lengths run from 9.8 to 26 metres, half the models between 12.5 and 16.9 metres. The number gives the approximate length in feet.
The split between Performance and Long Cruiser is the useful thing to know here, because it separates two boats of the same length into different animals. A Performance carries more sail, a deeper keel and a lighter interior; a Long Cruiser trades some of that for tankage, stowage and comfort at anchor. On the water the difference shows on a beat in a breeze, and ashore it shows in what the boat is worth.
