Solaris Yachts was founded in 1974 at Aquileia in north-eastern Italy, on the banks of the Natissa, under the name Se.Ri.Gi. Rinaldo Punti and Luigi De Cesco started the yard, which at first built hulls to other people's designs before launching projects of its own in 1977. Over the following decades it worked with naval architects such as Frans Maas, Sparkman & Stephens, Doug Peterson and Bill Tripp. Peterson drew the Solaris One and the Solaris Zero as well as the yard's first large deck house yachts, intended for ocean crossings. A collaboration with Fincantieri in the 1990s deepened its experience with composite materials, and since 2010 the company has traded as Solaris Yachts.

Our model records hold 29 designs built between 1986 and 2012: 27 sailing yachts and two motor yachts, the Express Cruiser 43 and 47. The Solaris 43 IMS is the oldest line, starting in 1986, while the Solaris 36 OD, 63, 76, 80 and 86 run until 2012. None of the lines reaches the most recent build years. Lengths start at 11 metres with the Solaris 36 OD and end at 28 metres with the Solaris 92 DH. Eight designs measure 20 metres or more, among them the Solaris Zero 67, the Solaris 70 DH and the Solaris 82. Several lines came in more than one version, for instance as Deck Saloon, as Sport Cruiser or with a deck house, marked DH.

Every Solaris afloat today is a used yacht, and at these sizes a thorough survey repays the effort. Standing and running rigging deserve a close look, as do the age of the sails and the state of the deck hardware. On a composite hull a surveyor will test for moisture and signs of osmosis, and on a boat that has crossed oceans the keel attachment and rudder bearings come first. Deck house versions carry more windows and seals, which age in strong sun. Many of these yachts have spent years in the Mediterranean or on long passages, so service records and the history of refits tell a buyer a great deal about what lies ahead.
