Cantiere SLY S.r.l; cover, cost and conditions

Sly Yachts is an Italian yard for what Italians call fast cruisers. According to the details recorded in an Italian boat archive, it builds yachts between 38 and 61 feet, all of them in carbon. Mast, spreaders, boom, bowsprit and steering gear come in carbon fibre as standard on every model. In 2010 the newly formed Sly Marine S.r.l., owned by the Trevisani family, took over the yard. Three years later the same family bought Cantiere del Pardo from Bavaria Yachtbau, bringing the Sly and Grand Soleil lines together. The Sly 42 was drawn by the designer Marco Lostuzzi. A dark carbon rig as standard rather than as an option is the easiest way to pick out a Sly.

Our model records list seven designs, all of them sailing yachts. The line starts with the Sly 38 at 11.52 metres and ends with the Sly 61 at 18.65 metres. In between sit the Sly 42 Fun, the Sly 43, the Sly 47, the Sly 48 C and the Sly 54 at exactly 16 metres. The earliest entry is the Sly 42 Fun from 2003, followed by the Sly 61 from 2005 and the Sly 47 from 2006. The Sly 47 stops in 2014, while every other entry runs to 2021 or 2022. None of the designs reaches the most recent build years. Three yachts stay under 13 metres and four measure 14 metres or more.

Carbon spars are light and stiff, yet they deserve a careful eye. On a used Sly, a rig survey should look at the mast step, spreader roots and the bowsprit fitting, where loads concentrate. Carbon steering gear and rudder bearings need checking for play. Because these boats are built to sail fast, sail inventories wear quickly, so the age and condition of the sails say a lot about how the yacht was used. Owners who raced their boat often kept detailed records of repairs, which are worth asking for before purchase. In the Mediterranean, deck hardware and teak, if fitted, suffer most from sun.
