Cape Dory Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Cape Dory Yachts was a Massachusetts boatbuilder on the US East Coast. Andrew Vavolotis founded it in 1963 and started with a small fibreglass sailing dinghy, the Cape Dory 10. It later moved to East Taunton and built sailboats from 10 to 45 feet plus power yachts. Many of the sailboats were drawn by Carl Alberg and share his look: a full keel with attached rudder, a fairly narrow hull, a pronounced sheer and moderate overhangs. Production ended in the early 1990s, and some designs were later built by other firms. The number in the name gives the length in feet.
Our model records list 29 Cape Dory models: 19 sailboats, two sailing yachts, five motor yachts, two motorsailers and one motorboat. Build years run from 1961 to 1998, and no model is still in production. Lengths range from 3.2 to 13.8 metres, with half of them between 7.35 and 10.1 metres. The Cape Dory 10 dinghy at 3.2 metres and the Typhoon Daysailer and Weekender at 5.7 metres open the range. The cruising boats run from the Cape Dory 22 at 6.8 metres to the 36 at 11 metres and the 45 at 13.8. The Poweryachts 28 to 36 measure 8.3 to 10.9 metres, and the 40 Explorer Trawler 12.2 metres.
Cape Dorys have a loyal following among coastal and bluewater cruisers. Most have been refitted at least once, so the state of the rig, sails, chainplates and engine, and the quality of past work, set the value far more than the year on the builder's plate.

For the Cape Dory 40 Explorer Trawler, Cape Dory 28 Powerboats,
Cape Dory 30 Poweryacht by Cape Dory Yachts and 26 more series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Cape Dory 40 Explorer Trawler, Cape Dory 300 Motorsailer,
Cape Dory 25D by Cape Dory Yachts and further series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Cape Dory 28 Powerboats, Cape Dory 30 Poweryacht,
Cape Dory 33 Poweryacht by Cape Dory Yachts and further series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
For the Cape Dory 36, Cape Dory MkII, Cape Dory 40 by Cape Dory Yachts and further series:
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
For the Cape Dory 24 Trawlers by Cape Dory Yachts series:
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part.
Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
