Cape Sailboats is tied to a single boat, the Cape 31, a racing yacht from Cape Town. The idea came from Lord Irvine Laidlaw, who wanted a keelboat of about 30 feet able to handle the strong south-easter in Table Bay: strictly one-design, with the pace and stability of bigger keelboats, and built in South Africa. The Irish designer Mark Mills drew the lines. Today the boats come out of Cape Performance Sailing, a company set up in 2021 with premises in Capricorn Park, Cape Town, and finished yachts are packed into containers for owners abroad.
