Cape Yachts; cover, cost and conditions

The Cape Cutter 19 hails from Cape Town. Nick and Lyndsay Voorhoeve wanted a small cruiser with traditional looks and in 1998 asked the South African designer Dudley Dix to draw it. The working name was Inspiration 19, but the boat was launched as the Cape Cutter 19 to point to Cape Town and the Cape of Good Hope. Her lines borrow from the local workboats: a glassfibre hull moulded with clinker steps, a gaff cutter rig and a lifting centreplate for shallow water. Building began in South Africa and was later also taken up by Honnor Marine in Britain. Stepped planking and two headsails ahead of the gaff main make her easy to recognise.

Our model records list one design for Cape Yachts: the Cape Cutter 19, a sailing boat of 5.8 metres with build years 1999 to 2009. The number in the name is her length in feet. According to the source the cabin sleeps two or three and the cockpit seats four. She trails easily and works as a daysailer, a club racer or a small coastal cruiser. The entry does not run into later years, so a Cape Cutter today means a used boat. An owners' group, the Cape Cutter 19 Association, keeps records of the boats' history and design.

A trailer sailer spends much of its life on the road, so the trailer deserves as much attention as the boat: bearings, brakes, rollers and the winch post. On the boat itself, check the centreplate pivot and lifting tackle, since a plate that has hit the bottom can bend or jam. The gaff jaws, throat and peak halyards and the bowsprit fittings wear in ways a bermudan rig does not. Wooden trim needs oil or varnish each season. Boats from the British build and from South Africa share the same design, and the history file usually shows where a particular hull was made.
