Capri Sailboats; cover, cost and conditions

Capri was the name Catalina Yachts used for its small sailing boats. Frank Butler founded Catalina in Hollywood, California, in 1969 and designed many of the yard's boats himself, the Cyclone among them. The dinghy was built by Capri Yachts, a division of Catalina, and was conceived as a one-design racer. She has a glassfibre hull with foam flotation, a stayed catboat rig on aluminium spars, a flexible mast and a loose-footed mainsail. One or two people sail her. A glassfibre daggerboard and a transom-hung rudder let her be launched straight off a beach, and the single sail with no jib gives her away from a distance.

Our model records hold one design for Capri Sailboats: the Cyclone 13 at 3.96 metres, classed as a sailing dinghy and listed for build years 1969 to 1990. The number in the name is her length in feet. The source gives a sail area of just under seven square metres and a hull weight of about 66 kilograms, light enough to move on a launching trolley single-handed. The Cyclone is no longer in production and the entry does not reach later years. Every boat on the market is therefore more than three decades old, the early hulls more than five.

On a dinghy this old, the first thing to check is weight. Foam flotation can soak up water over the years and make a hull noticeably heavier, which shows on the trolley before it shows on the water. Look for cracks around the daggerboard trunk, at the hull to deck joint and at the mast step, where a flexible rig puts repeated loads. Aluminium spars should be straight and free of corrosion at the fittings. A worn mainsail is easy to replace, a soft hull is not. The launching trolley and road trailer deserve the same inspection as the boat.
