Caribbean Sailing Yachts; cover, cost and conditions

Caribbean Sailing Yachts, better known as CSY, started life as a charter company in the Caribbean. Its founder, John Van Ost, was a New Jersey dentist with a love of sailing. To supply its own fleet, CSY built heavy-displacement cruising yachts in Tampa, Florida, through the 1970s and into the early 1980s. Frank Hamlin and Peter Schmitt drew the boats, and the Tampa designer Ted Irwin left his mark on the hull of the CSY 44. The lay-up is what people remember: solid glassfibre hulls and decks with no core, the hull up to one and a half inches thick. Brass companionway medallions with the CSY script and carved scrollwork at the bow complete the look. Owners could buy a yacht and lease it back into the charter fleet. Building stopped in the early 1980s, and Antigua Yachts took over the moulds of the 44.

Our model records list five designs, all sailing yachts. The CSY33 is the smallest at 10.06 metres, the CSY 37 measures 11.35 metres. Three entries belong to the CSY 44, each at 13.41 metres: Mid Cockpit, Pilot House and Walk-through. Mid Cockpit and Pilot House start in 1975, the CSY33 and CSY 37 in 1976, the Walk-through in 1977. Mid Cockpit and Walk-through run until 1983, the other three until 1982. No line reaches the recent build years. The Walk-through has a passage below deck to the aft cabin, while the Pilot House version carries a ketch rig.

A CSY is heavy, slow to tire its crew and built to take a beating, which is why so many have crossed oceans. Age is the main issue on a used one. Solid laminate avoids the soggy core that plagues cored decks, but chainplates, tanks and the original wiring are now over four decades old and often due for replacement. Look closely at the rudder, the keel bolts and the junction between hull and deck. Many boats served in charter before private owners took over, so the logbook and refit history tell more than the brochure. Spars and standing rigging on boats of this age are often due for renewal.
