Carroll Marine Ltd. was a yard in Rhode Island on the American east coast. Barry Carroll, an experienced offshore racer, founded it in 1984 with his wife Janice in Warren before moving the business to Bristol. The yard is closely tied to the designer Bruce Farr: Farr drew and marketed the boats, Carroll built them. The first Farr 40 One Design was launched in 1996, and Carroll built most of the class before later boats went to other builders. The yachts are easy to recognise by their flat, clean decks, deep keels and large wheels. The yard ceased operating in 2003.
Our model records list three designs, all sailing yachts. The Farr 40 is the largest at 12.41 metres and has the widest span of build years, 1983 to 2012, which also takes in boats from other builders. The Tripp 40 at 12.27 metres appears from 1987 to 1994. The Farr 30, the smallest at 9.43 metres, runs from 1995 to 2003. None of the lines reaches into recent build years. Two of the three measure just over twelve metres, while the Farr 30 stays below ten.
These boats were built to race, and many still do. A one design that has spent years on the circuit will have seen hard starts and crowded mark roundings, so the keel joint, rudder bearings and hull around the bow deserve a careful survey. Carbon spars and high-tension rigging have their own service life, and the sail wardrobe can be worth a good share of the boat. When buying used, ask for the race history, any repair records and when the rig was last fully inspected.
