Worth knowing
Carter Offshore Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions
Carter Offshore was the company of Dick Carter, an American yacht designer working north of Boston whose Rabbit won the 1965 Fastnet Race. The firm turned his winning race designs into fibreglass production boats. Most were built by Olympic Yachts at Lavrio in Greece, while the Carter 30 was also built in Britain and later in Poland. The boats are children of the IOR era, and their names show it: several carry the level rating classes of the time, from quarter tonner to two tonner, others simply their length in feet, like the Carter 33 and Carter 39.
We hold 22 Carter entries on record: 19 sailing yachts and three smaller sailing boats. The earliest build year is 1968, shared by the Carter 33, 39 and 40. Most models end in the late seventies or eighties, the Carter 42 runs to 1995 and the Carter 30 is listed until 2012. Five entries use tonner names. Ten are named for their length in feet, from 30 to 44. The smallest is the Carter 7,3 at 7.3 metres and the largest the Carter Luna at 15.4, which is probably the same yacht as the Luna recorded at 15.2 metres.
Almost every Carter afloat today is a classic with some racing history, often on its second or third owner. The boats usually keep a marina berth and come ashore for winter, when the rig is a good candidate for a close look. Older deck fittings, chainplates and the rudder bearing deserve checking, and the quarter tonners still fit on a road trailer for club regattas elsewhere.
