The Cat Ketch Corporation was a short-lived builder of the 1980s, born of a partnership between John Newton and the designer Halsey Herreshoff, both third-generation boatbuilders. Newton had been building trawler yachts in Hong Kong before he set up a company registered in the Cayman Islands to build boats in Honduras. What he was after were boats that are easy to handle and still fun to sail, with no winches and no headsails. The answer was the family of Herreshoff cat ketches, each with two masts carrying a single sail apiece. Production moved from one coast of Honduras to the other, and finally the moulds went to Texas, where the Sparhawk 36 drawn by Richard Black made up a brief last chapter before the firm closed.
Our model records list six sailing yachts, all with build years from 1985 to 1992. Four carry the Herreshoff name: the 28 Cat Ketch at 8.35 metres, the 33 at 9.9, the 40 at 11.95 and the 45, the largest at 13.5 metres. They are joined by the Sparhawk 36 CK at 10.8 and the Sparhawk 42 CK at 12.6 metres; CK simply stands for cat ketch. None of the lines reaches the most recent build years, and published histories of the company give somewhat earlier dates than our records, so the boat papers are worth reading carefully. Four of the six designs measure ten metres or more, which makes this a range of cruising yachts rather than daysailers.
A cat ketch suits short-handed sailing, but it raises its own questions for a buyer. Look carefully at the mast steps and partners, because a mast without shrouds puts all its load into the hull at deck and keel level. Booms, sail tracks and lazy jacks wear with age, and the large sails should be checked for stretch and chafe. Hulls laid up in the eighties are now around forty years old, so a moisture reading, a look at the deck core and a check of every through-hull are worth the price of a survey. The builder no longer exists, and owners' associations are a good place to find drawings and spares.
