Cavalier Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Cavalier Yachts is a New Zealand name. It grew out of a partnership between Peter K. Smith and John Salthouse, trading first as Salthouse Custom Glass Boats Ltd and later as Custom Glass Boats Ltd. The breakthrough came with the Cavalier 32, drawn by Bob Salthouse in 1969 and shown as a prototype at the Auckland Boat Show in 1970; the first boat was launched in July 1971. The yard built glassfibre cruising yachts for the waters around New Zealand. Later Jim Lawry took over the business as Export Yachts Ltd and focused on overseas sales, sending boats to Australia and the United States among others.
Our model records list three designs, all sailing yachts. The Cavalier 32 has the longest run, with build years from 1967 to 1991 in our records, and measures 9.75 metres. The Cavalier 26 at eight metres is the smallest design and appears from 1974 to 1989. The Cavalier 37 at 11.25 metres is the largest and runs from 1982 to 1994. None of the lines reaches into recent build years. Lengths from eight to just over eleven metres suit boats for weekend sailing as well as for longer cruises.
Every Cavalier on the market is at least thirty years old, and many have travelled far. Solid glassfibre hulls of that era tend to age well, but deck fittings, chainplates and the original wiring deserve a close look, as does the keel attachment on any boat that has seen hard groundings. Many owners have replaced rigs, engines and sails over the years, so the paperwork for those jobs adds real value. A boat that has crossed the Tasman or the Pacific may come well equipped, but check what has been added and how it was installed.
