Championships Yachting is based in Austria, not far from Vienna, and was set up by the racing sailor Hans Spitzauer. Hulls and decks are moulded in Bosnia, while final assembly takes place in Austria. The Lago 26 was drawn by the designer Juliane Hempel and is built using modern composite methods. One hull serves several versions: a sportsboat with a centreboard, a small cabin cruiser with a retractable ballast fin, a foiling model with deployable wings and, most recently, the Speedster. That last one is easy to recognise by its almost flat deck, which drops the taller coachroof of its sisters, and by its fixed bowsprit.
Our model records list three designs, all of them filed as open sailing boats. The Flaar 18 measures 5.44 metres and appears with build years from 2016 to 2020. The Lago 26 Hubkiel, the lifting keel version, is entered at 7.95 metres and runs from 2015 to 2020. The Lago 26 Speedster shares that hull length, starts in 2022 and is the only one of the three that reaches into the most recent build years. With its bowsprit the Speedster stretches to 9.55 metres overall according to the sailing press, and its draft can be varied between 0.36 and 1.60 metres. The range is small and focused: one compact boat under six metres and two versions of an eight metre hull.
A boat like the Lago 26 lives a busy life. A movable keel needs regular attention: check the lifting mechanism, the bearings and the trunk for wear, and look for cracks where loads go into the hull. A carbon rig is light and stiff but should be inspected for impact marks and worn fittings before each season. Many of these boats travel on trailers between lakes, so the trailer, its bearings and its lights deserve the same care as the boat. On a used Lago, ask how hard it was raced and how often sails and running rigging were renewed.
