Chantier Naval Structures; cover, cost and conditions

Chantier Naval Structures is the yard behind the Pogo sailing yachts. Christian Bouroullec founded it in 1987 in Quimper, Finistère, and in 1990 the company moved to Combrit-Sainte-Marine on the Breton Atlantic coast. It made its name with boats for the Mini-Transat, the single-handed race across the Atlantic: in 1995 the yard and the architect Pierre Rolland produced the Pogo 6.50 for the production class of that race. That racing background led to larger offshore and cruising yachts up to the Pogo 50 and, most recently, the Pogo RC, shaped around the IRC rating rule. The name tells you the size: older designs carry their length in metres, newer ones mostly in feet.

Our model records list 17 designs: 13 sailing yachts, two open sailing boats and two motor yachts. The list starts in 1992 with the Pogo 1, and seven designs reach into the most recent build years, namely the Pogo 30, Pogo 36, Pogo 40 S4, Pogo 44, Pogo RC and the two 9.5 metre motor yachts, Pogo 32 Loxo and Pogo 32 Loxo OB. Four boats measure exactly 6.5 metres: Pogo 1, Pogo 2, Pogo 3 and the Pogo Foiler. The Pogo 40 appears in three generations, from the first version in 2002 to the S4 from 2018. The Pogo 8.50, 10.50 and 12.50 fill the middle. The largest is the Pogo 50 at 15.89 metres, built from 2009 to 2022.

A second-hand Pogo has often logged real offshore miles or seasons on a race course. Check the keel attachment and the bottom of the hull for any sign of a hard grounding, look closely at the rudder bearings, and find out the age of the sails and the standing rigging. Race logs and delivery records help to judge how hard the boat has been pushed. Light, powerful boats like these reward a well set up autopilot and a tidy deck layout, so the condition of winches, clutches and lines matters. The Loxo motor yachts are a different matter altogether: engine hours, service history and the state of the drive come first.

What this means for the cover

As the Pogo 30, Pogo 32 Loxo, Pogo 32 Loxo OB by Chantier Naval Structures and 4 more series are

still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Pogo 12.50, Pogo 3, Pogo 50 by Chantier Naval Structures and 7 more series the market

value and the replacement cost often differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Pogo 30, Pogo 36, Pogo 40 S4 by Chantier Naval Structures and further series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.

For the Pogo 32 Loxo, Pogo 32 Loxo OB by Chantier Naval Structures series:

On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.

Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.

For the Pogo 2, Pogo 1 by Chantier Naval Structures series:

On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.

A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
