Chantier Poncin is the name behind the Harmony sailing yachts, a range of upmarket cruisers launched by Olivier Poncin's French company Poncin Yachts. Production borrowed ideas from the car industry and relied heavily on robots. The Harmony boats were built in a dedicated plant at Marans, close to the French Atlantic coast, which Poncin Yachts later sold. The number in each name is close to the length in feet: the Harmony 31 is just under 10 metres, the Harmony 52 just over 16. All are fixed-keel monohulls meant for coastal cruising and longer passages.
Our records list six Chantier Poncin designs, all Harmony sailing yachts: the 31, 34, 38, 42, 47 and 52. The Harmony 38 comes first in 2001, the 34, 42 and 47 follow in 2002 and the 31 and 52 in 2003. Five models are recorded to 2015 and the Harmony 52 to 2016. Lengths run from 9.91 metres for the Harmony 31 to 16.09 metres for the Harmony 52.
These are cruising yachts for a permanent berth, used for weekend hops along the coast and for summer passages further afield. The larger models from 14 metres are serious bluewater candidates once rig and systems are in good order. Standing rigging has a finite life and is worth renewing on schedule, and a yard with a proper lift is needed for the bigger boats.
