Character Boats works from Scarisbrick in Lancashire, on the north-west coast of England. The yard builds glassfibre day boats modelled on the old working craft of that coast, and several names point to the River Lune: the Lune Whammel, the Lune Longboat and the Lune Pilot. The Coastal 17 is a seagoing Lune Whammel drawn by Bill Bailiff. The Postboat has a lovely ancestor, the clinker-built sailing boat that once carried the mail to the houses along Loch Broom in Wester Ross; the original now rests in the museum at Irvine. Hardwood trim makes these boats look older than they are.
