Cherubini is a family yard on the New Jersey bank of the Delaware River. Its name belongs to John E. Cherubini, who began studying yacht design at the Westlawn School in 1938 at the age of 17, later worked in aviation engineering and built small outboard boats in the family business. He drew the Hunter 25 of 1972 and a run of later Hunter designs before the first Cherubini 44 was launched in 1977. Its lines are said to draw on L. Francis Herreshoff's Tioga II, later renamed Ticonderoga. The 44 pairs a glassfibre hull with a cold moulded plywood deck and cabin top, solid mahogany cabin sides and a ketch rig with the mizzen stepped in the cockpit.
Our model records hold two designs, both sailing yachts and both built from 1979 to 1986: the Cherubini 44 at 13.4 metres and the Cherubini 48 at 14.9 metres. Neither line reaches into recent build years, and the later Mark II, which John Cherubini's nephew introduced in 2007 with a moulded glassfibre deck, is not listed as a separate design. According to the trade press the first 44 was afloat by 1977, two years before our records begin. The two yachts are 1.5 metres apart. The 44 carries a shoal keel with centreboard and draws roughly 1.5 to 2.7 metres depending on the board.
A Cherubini built in the early eighties has a story behind it, and the details of that story matter. The cold moulded deck and cabin top are the first thing to check: moisture around fittings, stanchion bases and the mast step can spread unseen. Mahogany cabin sides want regular varnish, and their condition says a lot about the care a boat has had. The centreboard pivot and pennant wear over the years and are worth a look with the boat out of the water. With two masts there are twice the chainplates, spreaders and halyards to inspect. John Cherubini died in 1983, so original drawings are a precious part of a boat's papers.
