Worth knowing
CoCoBe B.V.; cover, cost and conditions
CoCoBe B.V. is listed in our records with two boats of British origin, Romilly and Roxane, both drawn by the English designer Nigel Irens. Roxane began in 1994 as Irens' own boat, inspired by a Shetland fishing boat he once owned, and went into production afterwards. Romilly followed as a smaller day sailer for estuaries and coastal waters, designed at the request of Bill Stanton. The class website names a Dutch company, Concord Beheer B.V., as the current builder of Romilly. Both boats are easy to recognise: a traditional look with lug sails and loose footed mains, unstayed masts in carbon and epoxy, and on Roxane a second mast aft as a yawl.
Our model records list two designs, both entered as sailing boats and both from 2018 onwards: Romilly at 7 metres and Roxane at 9 metres. Both reach into the most recent build years. The class website gives Romilly a length of 6.7 metres and offers her in glassfibre or strip planked pine, at around 1.2 tonnes. Both boats have a centreplate and very little draft: Roxane draws 0.76 metres with the plate up, Romilly just 0.5 metres. That opens up the shallow creeks and estuaries Irens had in mind.
The rig is simple to handle but deserves attention. Unstayed carbon masts should be checked at the partners and heel for chafe and cracks, and the lug yards and their parrels wear where they bear on the mast. The centreplate and its case are the other key point: on a used boat, look at the pivot, the lifting tackle and any signs of grounding on the plate's leading edge. A strip planked pine Romilly needs the care of a wooden boat, with its sheathing kept intact. These boats like to sit on the mud at low tide, so the bottom and keel band tell a lot about the life a boat has had.
