Cougar is a British name with its roots in offshore powerboat racing. Founded in 1969 by Clive Curtis, the company built fast craft for racing, leisure, commercial and military work, and was early to field a catamaran that won in international offshore racing. In the late seventies Cougar Marine, then part of the Toleman Group, moved into the former Fairey Marine sheds at Hamble Point. When Toleman stopped trading in the late eighties, Curtis carried on building smaller craft at Warsash, and his son Steve Curtis, an offshore racer himself, later took over. In 2001 a partnership with Halmatic was formed for fast patrol boats under the Enforcer name. The racing and patrol background shows in the leisure range too, starting with names such as Sport Racer, Viper and Enforcer.

Our model records list 21 designs: 15 rigid inflatables, four motorboats and two motor yachts. The entries start in 2004, and 17 designs reach into the most recent build years. The A series with the A6, A6,5 and A7 spans six to seven metres, the C series with the C10, C11 and C12 ten to twelve metres. The R series takes in the R8, R9, R10 and R11 Sport, the early R10-Rib and the R12 Viper. The Enforcer name appears on the Enforcer 35, the Enforcer 40 Gen4, the C12 Enforcer Rib and the R10 Enforcer RIB. Add the Cougar 10 Custom Tender, the US1 38 and the Sport Racer, plus two entries under the Honda name from 2004 to 2012. Twelve designs measure ten metres or more, and the largest, the C12 and C12 Enforcer Rib, reach twelve metres.

A fast RIB lives a hard life. Slamming at speed loads the hull, the console mounts and the transom, so a used Cougar deserves a close look at the hull laminate around the keel and at the transom for cracks. The tubes are the other wear item: check seams, valves and the glue line to the hull, and ask how old the tubes are. Engine hours matter more than the year on a boat that is run near full throttle, and service records for outboards or sterndrives should be complete. Many smaller Cougars are trailed, so the trailer's brakes and rollers belong on the inspection list.
