Essex Yacht; cover, cost and conditions
Essex Yacht Builders worked at Wallasea on the River Crouch, a tidal river in Essex. From 1967 it produced the Cleopatra 23, a cabin boat offered in two versions: the Blue Nile with four berths and the Express Fisherman with two berths, a bigger cockpit, a smaller cabin and a hard top. In 1971 the vulnerable perspex windows around the forward cabin gave way to two glass panels, and the boat was renamed Cleopatra 700. It came as Family, Fisherman and Weekender, the last with a large open cockpit and a small two berth cabin. The hulls were glassfibre; the early seventies Cleopatra 850 is recorded on the Norfolk Broads as a fibreglass boat with a fixed canopy. Around 1975 the moulds for the small Cleopatra passed to another firm.
Our model records list twelve designs: six motor yachts, four motorboats and two sailing yachts, built between 1963 and 1988. Six carry the Cleopatra name: the 23, 23 E.F., 26, 26 Sportsrider, 30 and 850. The Cleopatra 23 is the shortest at 6.9 metres. The Luxury Cruiser 900 and the Cleopatra 30 measure 9.14 metres each, and the Motor-Cruiser 33 at 10.06 metres is the longest motor boat on the list. The Weekender 700 is listed from 1967 to 1975, and the Weekender 700 Super from 1982 to 1988 is the most recent entry. The two sailing yachts, Salar and Salar 40, are the oldest, from 1964 and 1963, both at 11.9 metres. No line reaches recent build years.
A Cleopatra today is a classic, and buying one is mostly about the condition of an old glassfibre hull and its machinery. Look for osmosis blisters below the waterline, soft spots in the deck and cockpit sole and cracks around the windscreen frame. Many boats have had their original petrol outdrives replaced by diesels, so ask what is fitted and how old it is. Window seals and the canopy are common sources of leaks. Boats that have spent their lives on the Broads or other inland waters often show less wear on the hull but more on the interior. For the Salar, check the rig, chainplates and engine as on any older sailing yacht.

by Essex Yacht and further series: On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part.
Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
For the Salar 40, Salar by Essex Yacht series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Cleopatra 850, Cleopatra 26, Luxury Cruiser 900 by Essex Yacht and further series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
