Fairey Marine; cover, cost and conditions
Fairey Marine grew out of the aircraft maker Fairey Aviation in the late 1940s and set up on the River Hamble near Southampton, with Sir Charles Richard Fairey behind the venture. It borrowed a method from aircraft production called hot moulding: thin layers of birch plywood were glued over a male mould and cured in a large autoclave, which allowed wooden hulls to be built in series. The yard first made its name with racing dinghies such as the Firefly, Albacore and Flying Fifteen, then with fast motor cruisers. Alan Burnard drew the Huntsman as a fairly deep vee with a single chine and spray rails, skinned in laminated mahogany. The company went into receivership in 1975, and the business later re-emerged as FBM Marine.

The oldest is the Atlanta 26, listed from 1959 to 1967 at 7.93 metres, a class drawn by Uffa Fox and known for its retractable keels. The Spearfish runs from 1968 to 1978 at 9.1 metres and also served as a police launch and as a Royal Navy pinnace. The Fairey Huntsman 31 follows from 1970 to 1976 and, at 9.6 metres, is the longest boat in the list. None of the three lines reaches recent build years; the youngest boat dates from 1978.
Any Fairey on the market today is a classic, and the hull deserves the closest look. Hot-moulded wood stays strong as long as the glue lines hold and water stays out, so a surveyor will search for soft spots, delamination around fastenings and fresh paint hiding repairs. Mahogany topsides want regular varnish or paint, and a boat kept in a shed over winter tends to age far more gently than one left afloat. On the Huntsman and Spearfish the engines and shaft lines matter as much as the hull, since many have been repowered over the decades. On an Atlanta 26 it pays to inspect the keel lifting gear and the keel boxes.
