Fathom Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Fathom Yachts built its first boats in a small plant in Sedro-Woolley, Washington, aiming for an expedition-style motor yacht at family scale: room for a cruising couple and the occasional guest rather than a crew. Naval architect Greg Marshall drew the design. Weight-saving composites, a propeller tunnel and an efficient hull let a single electronic diesel push the boat from displacement speeds up into the high teens. The look is plain and purposeful, and the wide beam makes room for two staterooms and a generous saloon. In 2017 Roy Parkinson of Park Isle Marine in Sooke, British Columbia, bought the moulds and built a demonstration boat on the original lines.
Our model records list three Fathom designs, all motor yachts. The Fathom Expedition 40 starts in 2006 at 12.36 metres and the Expedition 43 follows from 2013 at 12.83 metres; both reach into the latest build years. The Fathom Element is recorded from 2007 to 2019 and sits between them at 12.59 metres. That makes a remarkably tight range, with less than half a metre between the shortest and the longest boat. Choosing a Fathom is therefore less about size than about build year, fit-out and where the boat was finished.
These boats are made for distance, so a buyer should look at what long passages wear out first. A single engine means everything rides on one diesel, its cooling system and the shaft line in the tunnel, so engine hours, service records and an oil analysis are worth asking for. Composite hulls should be checked for moisture around through-hull fittings and deck hardware. Tankage, watermaker and battery bank decide how far the boat can really go, and a sea trial at both slow and fast cruising speed shows whether the hull still runs clean and the boat tracks straight.

Series by Fathom Yachts, build years and cover
Fathom Expedition 40 is a motor yacht from Fathom Yachts, built since 2006.
Also a motor yacht, built since 2013.
Fathom Element is a motor yacht from Fathom Yachts, built from 2007 to 2019.
As the Fathom Expedition 40 and Fathom Expedition 43 by Fathom Yachts series are still in
production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable.
Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
For the Fathom Element by Fathom Yachts series the market value and the replacement cost often
differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the Fathom Expedition 40, Fathom Expedition 43, Fathom Element by Fathom Yachts series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
