Freeman (Marine); cover, cost and conditions

Freeman is a British name for glassfibre river cruisers. Founder John Freeman began with caravans, where he first tried polyester resin, and went on to set up one of the first production lines for GRP family cruisers with the Freeman 22. Buyers no longer had to commission a designer and a builder; they could order a boat ready to use. Freemans remain a familiar sight on English rivers and canals. The number in the name is roughly the length in feet.

Our model records list ten designs: three motorboats, six motor yachts and one sailing yacht. The motorboats are the Freeman 22 at 6.75 metres, built from 1959 to 1973, the 23 and the 24. The motor yachts run from the 7.92 metre 26 Mk II through the 27, 30, 32 and 33 to the 12.5 metre Freeman 41. The catalogue also lists the 9.14 metre Seadog sailing yacht from 1964 to 1976. Build years end in 1985 with the last Freeman 27.

A Freeman is a classic now, often with a newer engine and a refitted cabin. These boats suit inland waters, with locks, moorings by a towpath and slow passages through the countryside. The smaller models still tow well. Gelcoat, window seals and the old wiring are the usual points to watch on a boat of this age.
