Worth knowing
Gorbon Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Gorbon Yachts is a Turkish yard run by the Gorbon family; Burak Gorbon took over the rights to the brand in 2003. It builds motor and sailing yachts in small numbers, with a good deal of handwork and interiors fitted to the owner's wishes. The range has two lines, and the name tells you which is which: Sports marks the motor yachts, Classic the traditionally styled sailing yachts. The number gives the length in feet, more or less, so the Gorbon 34 Sports is about 33 feet and the 57 Classic a little over 57.
Our model records hold seven Gorbon designs: five Sports motor yachts and two Classic sailing yachts. The Sports models are the Gorbon 25, 29, 34, 40 and 52; the Classic models are the 40 and the 57. All seven are recorded from 2005 to 2012. Lengths run from the 7.89 metre Gorbon 25 Sports to the 17.42 metre Gorbon 57 Classic. The motor yachts top out with the 15.7 metre 52 Sports, and the 40 Classic, at 12.14 metres, is slightly longer than its 11.92 metre Sports namesake.
A custom-built interior is part of the appeal, and it pays to keep a full list of what was fitted. The small Sports boats can still be moved by road, while the larger ones and both Classic sailers live on a marina berth. Varnished wood on a Classic needs attention every season, and in Mediterranean sun a cockpit awning saves a lot of work.
